School Board #2142 Pool Decision Update

Good News! On April 27, 2009 at the regular meeting in Orr, Minnesota the school board recommendation was to fund a portion of the yearly costs of pool operation for the three schools in Babbitt, Cook and Tower for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. This will keep our pool in Babbitt open while allowing additional fundraising within our area by our sports team and community members for additional activities and the benefit of the surrounding area and its members.

The school board is also looking into an alternate pool heating system such as the Mesabi-East school district has to provide for a lower cost of operation when heating water with the boiler is not cost effective during the non-heating season. This will allow our pool to generate more revenue during other parts of the year.

Based upon information received at the meeting it appears that the operational pool levy failed in committee in the Minnesota legislature.

The end result is that we have a pool in the immediate future and we all need to continue supporting it and helping to maintain its health for all in the community and area to use.

For all community and area members who have pledged money previously or would like to make a donation an account has been established at the Babbitt Steelworkers Credit Union to handle pool fundraising activities. Any checks that are written should be made out to “Northeast Country Swim Boosters”.

The direct mailing address of the credit union is below:

Babbitt Steelworkers Credit Union
24 Commerce Rd. Babbitt, Mn. 55706
(218) 827-3121

The monies from this account will be forwarded to the school district earmarked for the Babbitt-Embarrass swimming pool and BETA girls swim team dependent on the needs of each and the school.

We have many enjoyable fundraisers being planned for the community. We hope that you plan to attend and enjoy them as well. Current updates and fundraisers will be posted on the Northeast Country Swim Boosters website: http://necswimboosters.blogspot.com/ , the Babbitt, Minnesota blogspot: http://babbittcs.blogspot.com/ , and in the local newspapers.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the many people in this area who have donated and will continue to donate their time, resources and influence to help maintain this valuable asset for our community and area.

Thank you all,

Informational Note / Clarification

Northeast Country Swim Boosters was initially formed as a means of assisting the Saint Louis County School Board (#2142) help fund its pool(s).

As time has passed, the two other schools affected, Cook and Tower, have formed fundraising groups for their own pools and are school specific. As such, Northeast Country Swim Boosters is currently working with and fundraising for the Babbitt-Embarrass school to help defray the costs of operating and maintaining our school pool. We presently are not fundraising in the communities of Cook and Tower and are fundraising for the Babbitt-Embarrass school pool. We wish them the best in their efforts. We hope this clears up any confusion.

Also, as a reminder the next school board meeting is March 23, 2009. Please attend to show your support for our school pools.

Pool / BETA Boosters Pledge Support Form

On January 26, 2009 a group of supporters for the St. Louis County school pools and girls competitive swim team (BETA) attended the St. Louis County District 2142 school board meeting. Under consideration at this meeting was discussion of discontinuing the use of the school swimming pools in Babbitt-Embarrass, Tower, and Cook which would directly impact the communities and the future of the BETA swim team at the start of the 2009 - 2010 school year.

The Board is seeking legislative help which if passed would take effect in the 2010/2011 academic school year. As a stop gap measure the Board is suggesting we look for a means to help reduce the cost to the district of operating these pools and BETA swim team for the upcoming season and return on March 23, 2009 with funding ideas. Suggestions such as obtaining pledges and sponsorship from local and regional businesses, community members and planned fund raisers such as beef jerky sales, towel sales, car washes, Peter Mitchell and Walleye Whamma booths, feeds, raffles and other miscellaneous sales are being discussed.

Yearly expenditures for the three pools as calculated by the school district are close to 150,000 dollars and expenditures for the Babbitt-Embarrass pool alone were calculated by the school district at approximately 36,000 dollars.

Funding from this account for the school district would be contingent upon the board support of our pool and continued support of the BETA swim team for the upcoming school year (2009 – 2010). BETA and our fundraising group has members from Babbitt-Embarrass, Tower-Soudan and the Ely area.

Would you be able to donate or canvas for the Babbitt-Embarrass pool and BETA swim team? Thank you in advance for your willingness to help save our pool and team.

Should the board decide to continue its support of our community pools and swim team a donation account will be set up at the Babbitt Steelworkers’ Credit Union in Babbitt, Mn.

We are asking for your help and financial support for our pools and BETA swim team. Without our School District #2142 pools and swim team, we as communities will lose a great asset that will adversely affect our students and families.
