BETA eighth in 7A swim meet

Article from the Ely Echo: Nov. 19th, 2010
http://www.elyecho.com/main.asp?SectionID=12&SubSectionID=12&ArticleID=10820&TM=41224.14

No one's moving on to the state meet and only a handful of swimmers qualified for the section finals, but head coach Rose Spehar was still very happy about the performance of the BETA Fighting Fish at the Section 7A meet.

That's because over the course of two days, BETA swimmers combined to make 30 time improvements and finished the 2010 season on a strong note.

The combined Ely, Babbitt-Embarrass and Tower-Soudan squad took eighth among nine schools in the 7A competition, which wrapped up last Saturday at Hibbing.

"We were extremely pleased with how the girls swam - both days," said Spehar. "We had 17 improvements from 11 girls on Thursday and 11 from seven girls on Saturday."

BETA's highest overall individual finish came from Cassie Evancevich, who reached the finals in the 100 yard breaststroke and took sixth overall, up from seventh in the preliminaries.

Evancevich's time was a season-best 1:18.25.

Senior Laura Levar also reached the finals, shaving time from the preliminaries and moving up a place to take seventh in 1:09.22.

Evancevich and Levar were the only BETA individuals to reach the top-eight, although the Fighting Fish had an eighth-place relay.

Levar, Evancevich and sisters Shelby and Kenzie Maidl combined to take eighth in the 400 freestyle relay. Their time was 4:15.54.

It was Kenzie Maidl teaming with Clara DeRemee, Galina Herring and Taylor Matthias in the 200 freestyle relay. They finished ninth in 2:00.02.

Also taking ninth was the 200 medley relay unit of Herring, Evancevich, Levar and Shelby Maidl, with a time of 2:13.86.

Also placing in Saturday's finals were:

• 500 freestyle - 10. Kenzie Maidl, 6:07.57; 12. Shelby Maidl, 6:12.18;

• 200 freestyle - 16. Shelby Maidl, 2:22.27;

• 200 individual medley - 13. Cassie Evancevich, 2:38.86;

• 50 freestyle - 15. Kenzie Maidl, 28.99.

Other BETA preliminary results were:

• 200 individual medley - 22. DeRemee, 2:52.48;

• 50 freestyle - 21. Corral Meskill, 29.46; 22. Herring, 29.62; 30. Leslyn Van Every, 31.70;

• 100 butterfly - 21. Matthias, 1:24.69;

• 100 freestyle - 22. Meskill, 1:06.58; 26. Abbie Blomberg, 1:09.65; 31. Lily Nelson, 1:15.92;

• 100 backstroke - 19. Levar, 1:14.92; 21. Herring, 1:17.32; 25. Matthias, 1:19.77; 28. DeRemee, 1:21.50;

• 100 breaststroke -29. Van Every, 1:33.78.

Swim Meet vs. Chisholm Oct. 26, 2010 - Parent's Night

Video From Parents Night, BETAS (Babbitt, Embarrass, Ely, Tower,Soudan) vs. Chisholm Swim Team. It was a happy and sad day as this was the last home meet of the year for all and the seniors. This is a community partnership which works that allows area children the chance to compete. This program has grown since its inception and in my biased opinion, very successful. The number of girls competing has
increased quite a bit. Many thanks to coaches Rose, Chelsea and Julie.

On another note, I am hearing whispers from the area (B-E & T-S) school kids of the new sports school team name in the Northeast for 2011 and forward. If the students in the end decide upon this name I
like it. It respects the past in our area while embracing the future.

The "winds of change" are indeed upon us.

Peace and welcome all to this reorganized Northeast school in 2011.
 We look forward to it so everyone can continue to have future
opportunities.
